40 Dorm and College Essentials You Actually Need
Everything you might not have considered adding to your shopping list
Going off to college calls for a bittersweet mix of emotions. Shopping and packing for this new adventure can feel just as overwhelming. You might have already scoured Pinterest boards and TikTok videos and still be wondering what dorm or college supplies you will actually need. From dorm essentials to wardrobe necessities, there are a plethora of products you might not have considered adding to your packing list for college. After looking back on my own experience and doing some research, I’ve pulled together a comprehensive list of supplies for college that will help you look and feel your best heading into this next chapter of your life!
Dorm living:
These were all items that made my college dorm living (and showering) experience 10x easier in my freshman year. Having a mattress topper truly changed my sleep and my back is forever grateful (especially with those rock hard dorm mattresses). When it comes to getting ready for the day, having shower shoes and a caddy are essential when you’re dealing with a communal bathroom. This light up vanity and full length mirror will also be a lifesaver, especially if your dorm has horrible lighting or if your room just doesn’t come with a mirror at all. You also can’t go wrong with a steamer to help you get rid of those stubborn wrinkles. Lastly, having a vacuum cleaner handy is necessary for cleaning up all the crumbs and debris that will build up on your dorm room floor.
Kitchen:
If you want to put together cheap, quick meals in your room or be able to forgo the questionable food at your dining hall at times, you might want to add some of these items to your list. Having a blender for smoothies, a Keurig for a fresh cup of coffee, or even this 3-in-1 breakfast maker will be a lifesaver for when you don’t have much time in the morning before class. If you want to make something a little more elaborate, having an air fryer will be a game changer. You can practically cook anything and everything through this with just a touch of a few buttons. This retro mini fridge is perfect for storing all your drinks and food, and this dinnerware set has everything you need for your next meal. Lastly, let’s talk about hydration. This Brita pitcher is a necessity and this insulated Owala water bottle is perfect if you want cold water accessible at all times. And having a water kettle is essential for when you want a hot cup of tea or perhaps a late night bowl of ramen noodles.
Tech:
Whether you want a quality pair of wireless headphones for studying or an iPad to make note taking much more effortless, this list of tech products has got you covered. You will definitely want to have a printer in your room, especially for those days when you need to print out a paper for class at the last minute. And when it comes to keeping your electronics charged, these power strips are perfect to keep by your desk and nightstand. Additionally, this all-in-one alarm clock not only charges your phone but it also acts as a speaker when you want to play some music. The last item I recommend on this list is a disposable camera. It’s the one thing I wish I had in college that I never bought. Whether you bring it out with you on a fun night with friends or during a wholesome picnic at the park, the plethora of fun memories and candid moments you will be able to capture through it is absolutely priceless.
Clothing:
When it comes to dressing for class, you will want to be comfortable. Having items like this matching sweatsuit set, half zip sweatshirt, ribbed crewneck, or these running shorts will be perfect for looking cute while being comfortable. You also can’t go wrong with this long sleeve bodysuit or oversized button down. When it comes to jeans, the Levi’s ribcage are a go-to and these jeans with a slit are perfect for adding a bit more flare to your outfit. As for shoes, these white Vejas will match any outfit, and these black boots are perfect for going to class or even a night out.
Backpacks:
Lastly, let's talk about backpacks! At the top of this list is the The North Face Borealis backpack, which is one of the best backpacks on the market. It can hold everything you need and the quality is just top notch. I’ve had mine for many years and it’s perfect for school, travel, hiking, and more. If you want something smaller and a little more fun, the Fjallraven Kanken bag is for you. I'm especially obsessed with this navy one. Next, we have a couple of classics – the Herschel and the JanSport backpacks. They both have a clean and simple look, and they're great for any student. But wait…is a backpack not really your style? These two tote bags listed below are perfect for school or even work. This leather one has a sleeker and more structured look while this canvas one is a bit more relaxed and is suitable for travel with its trolley sleeve. It’s also a great Beis dupe!
I hope this college essentials checklist will make your shopping experience much more effortless. I knew I struggled with knowing what to bring to college when I was 18 and having a list like this would have been an absolute lifesaver. Good luck on this next journey and happy packing!
